This was just a day to visit family that we have in Okanogan. It’s always good to see my aunt and uncle and grandfather. Okanogan is a small town right next to Omak, and in northern Washington about 50 miles south of the Canadian border. Not much to report about the visit, nor the area, although it’s not far from Chief Joseph Dam and the east entrance to the Northern Cascades, both of which we saw this trip.
Omak’s claim to fame is the Omak Stampede. It’s a big deal. The event includes the Suicide Race. There is an extremely steep hill, that leads down into the Okanogan River, and horses with their riders go galloping full speed over and down this hill, and across the river to be the first one there. This race is simply insane. There is no other way to put it. Check out some of these videos:
The rest of the stampede includes a carnival, Indian Encampment, Western and Native Art Shows, rodeo dances, and much more.
